People

Teachers/Facilitators

Adult staff hired by the Association of Washington School Principals (AWSP) to teach the content and grade the assignments. All our teachers have a history serving on Bilingual programs for AWSP. Most speak both Spanish and English, with two exceptions who are currently learning Spanish. 

College Mentors

College Mentors are hired and vetted by the universities, usually though the College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP). They will have attended higher education for at least a year and are a great resource for learning about college life on the different college campuses.

Purpose and Goals: 

(entering 9th and 10th grade students)

The purpose of this program is to bring awareness to students of the requirements for attending post-secondary institutions while focusing on the need to prepare by doing well in high school courses.  This will be accomplished by providing students with an opportunity to attend a seven day academy at a university in order to experience elements of university life.

The students will attend a seven day campus experience where:

1)     The student will discover their personal style of leadership, communication skills and team building and learn how to be more effective as an individual pursuing post-secondary education.

2)     The student will identify a career path that will utilize his/her innate strengths.

a.     The student will identify the post-secondary schools that offer the degree or certification needed for the chosen career.

b.     The student will have an opportunity to meet professional individuals and have an opportunity to discuss the details of the professions.

c.      The student will visit university departments to gain understanding of university lifestyle.

3)     The student will develop an individual academic plan for the subsequent school years and requirements for pursuing their selected career path.

4)     The student will explore and engage in a variety of career paths and academic interests through tours, professional panelists, and fairs.

5)     The student will be provided information regarding the FAFSA and scholarship or other resources and the process for completing applications.

6)     The student will participate in a transitional workshop to identify obstacles that may be encountered in their high school or post-secondary efforts.  They will work with team facilitators to identify individual solutions.

7)     The student’s parents will be informed about the program so they are able to partner with their child’s efforts to graduate and pursue their selected career path.

8)     The student will interact with college students similar to their socio-economic background, and with similar family, cultural, and educational barriers. They will become aware that with effort they can achieve their post-secondary dream.

9) The student will be encouraged to share their academy experience with their community and their parent advisory councils.

Propósito y objetivos:

El propósito de este programa es concientizar a los estudiantes sobre los requisitos para asistir a instituciones universitarias mientras que al mismo tiempo se enfoca en la necesidad de prepararlos para que les vaya bien en los cursos de la preparatoria. Esto se logrará brindando a los estudiantes la oportunidad de asistir a una academia de siete días en una universidad para experimentar elementos de la vida universitaria.

Los estudiantes asistirán a una experiencia de campus de siete días donde:

1) El estudiante descubrirá su estilo personal de liderazgo, habilidades de comunicación y trabajo en equipo y aprenderá a ser más efectivo como persona que busca educación más allá de la preparatoria.

2) El estudiante identificará una trayectoria profesional donde utilizará sus fortalezas innatas.

a. El alumno identificará las escuelas universitarias que ofrecen el título o la certificación necesaria para la carrera elegida.

b. El estudiante tendrá la oportunidad de conocer personas profesionales y una oportunidad para hablar sobre los detalles de las profesiones.

c. El estudiante visitará los departamentos universitarios para comprender el estilo de vida universitario.

3) El estudiante desarrollará un plan académico individual para los años escolares posteriores y los requisitos para seguir su carrera profesional seleccionada.

4) El estudiante explorará y participará en una variedad de carreras e intereses académicos a través de visitas, paneles profesionales y ferias.

5) El estudiante recibirá información sobre FAFSA y becas u otros recursos y el proceso para completar las solicitudes.

6) El estudiante participará en un taller de transición para identificar los obstáculos que pueden encontrarse en sus esfuerzos de la escuela preparatoria o universitaria. Trabajarán con facilitadores de equipo para identificar soluciones individuales.

7) Los padres del estudiante serán informados sobre el programa para que puedan asociarse con los esfuerzos de sus hijos para graduarse y seguir su carrera profesional seleccionada.

8) El estudiante interactuará con estudiantes universitarios similares a sus antecedentes socioeconómicos y con barreras familiares, culturales y educativas similares. Se darán cuenta de que con esfuerzo pueden lograr su sueño universitario.

9) Se alentará al estudiante a compartir su experiencia académica con su comunidad y sus consejeros en sus escuelas.

THE ACADEMIES: The Dare to Dream Academy and the Math and Science Academic Academy for eligible migrant students are ONE AMAZING RESIDENTIAL WEEK at a university campus.

• REGISTRATION, TRANSPORTATION, ROOM AND BOARD are FREE

• UNIVERSITY PROFESSORS teach the HANDS-ON interactive activities

• Rigorous and relevant LEADERSHIP AND ACADEMIC PROGRAMS promote student learning along with SOCIAL AND RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES

• EARN A .5 ELECTIVE, MATH, OR SCIENCE CREDIT by participating for the full duration of the academy

• MENTORS—former migrant students, now College Assistance Migrant Program staff are there every step of the way!

OSPI

The Migrant Education division of the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction funds the Dare to Dream Academies across four university campuses. OSPI sets and measures outcomes for program development, student recruitment and registration.

The College Assistance Migrant Program at each university campus leads the implementation of each academy strand CAMP hires college mentors and organizes travel, lodging and meals. College mentors are the backbone to the the academies.

aWSP

The Association of Washington School Principals evaluates course rigor and administers course credit for each academy strand. AWSP hires instructors to evaluate, implement and develop the curriculum for the Hero's journey strand.

La asociación servirá a más de 600 estudiantes de secundaria que trabajan a través de días intensivos de 14 horas donde los estudiantes están totalmente inmersos en las áreas temáticas.

La introducción práctica a las ciencias, las matemáticas, la ingeniería y el contenido de auto-desarrollo construye una identidad académica y confianza en los estudiantes. Las habilidades académicas adquiridas durante las Academias Atrevéte a Soñar ayudan a los estudiantes a desarrollar visiones profesionales y da la estructura la importancia del desempeño de la escuela secundaria. Los estudiantes de primer y segundo año preparan el Plan para la Escuela Secundaria y Más Allá adaptado a sus requisitos específicos de graduación y crean presentaciones para llevar a sus consejos asesores de padres. Juniors y seniors conducen experimentos en ciencia y matemáticas trabajando con células vivas, reptiles, insectos, invernaderos, cohetes, robótica y las estrellas. Además, los estudiantes actuales del CAMP sirven como mentores por medio de actividades académicas y como vivir en los dormitorios. Los mentores universitarios son críticos para las narrativas académicas emergentes en nuestros alumnos jóvenes.

The Dare to Dream Academies are sponsored by the Migrant Education Program (MEP) of the Office of Superintendent of Public Instructions (OSPI) in partnership with the College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) on each university campus and the Association of Washington School Principals (AWSP). AWSP administers .5 credits for the successful completion of the each academy through the Principals’ Student Learning Center. Incoming 11th and 12th grade students will receive science or math credit (Academic Academy), while incoming 9th and 10th grade students will attend the Hero’s Journey Academy (Exploring Your Future). The academies are seven days in length and will be held at four universities across Washington state: Central Washington University, Eastern Washington University, University of Washington and Washington State University. The partnership will serve over 600 high school students working through intensive 14-hour days where students are totally immersed in the subject areas.

The hands-on introduction to sciences, math, engineering and self-development content builds an academic identity and confidence in students. Academic skills gained during the Dare to Dream Academies help students develop career visions and frames the importance of high school performance. Freshman and sophomores prepare a high school and beyond plan tailored to their specific graduation requirements and create presentations to take back to their parent advisory councils. Juniors and seniors conduct experiments in science and math by working with live cells, reptiles, insects, green houses, rockets, robotics, and the stars. In addition, current CAMP students serve as mentors throughout the academic activities and for dorm living. College going mentors are critical to the emerging academic narratives in our young scholars.
